Minor cracks in the V-grooved portion of the drive belt are considered normal and acceptable. If the drive belt has chunks missing from the ribs, the drive belt should be replaced.

Serpentine Drive Belt, Replace
Vehicle: 1998 Ford Contour GL 2.5 V6 GAS
- On water pump drive belt, remove water pump pulley shield bolts from lefthand valve cover, then the shield from vehicle.
- Remove water pump drive pulley, then rotate water pump belt tensioner clockwise by hand.
- On accessory drive belt, rotate tensioner clockwise using breaker bar installed in 3/8 inch square hole in drive belt tensioner arm.
- On all drive belts, lift belt over pulley flanges, then remove from vehicle.
