- Lower tilt steering column to its' lowest position.
- Grasp edges of instrument cluster trim plate and pull away from instrument panel.
- Remove accessory switches from cluster trim plate by releasing tabs located on sides of switches.
- Disconnect headlamp and accessories electrical connectors, then remove cluster trim plate.

Service procedures given are for compressor removed and mounted in suitable holding fixture. However, on most applications, compressor clutch components can be serviced without removing compressor or recovering refrigerant from system. If refrigerant recovery becomes necessary, refer to "General Service" for procedure.
To prevent serious internal compressor damage, when removing or installing clutch components, never apply pressure directly to the compressor shaft. Always use a suitable shaft protector.

Testing the refrigerant system for leaks is one of the most important phases of troubleshooting. One or more of the methods outlined will prove useful in detecting leaks or checking connections if service work is performed. Before beginning any leak test, attach a manifold gauge set and note pressure. If little or no pressure is indicated, a partial charge must be installed. Check all connections, compressor head gasket, oil filler plug and compressor shaft seal for leaks.
For R-134a system an electronic type leak detector is recommended.

Removal
- Recover refrigerant as outlined under , then loosen and reposition compressor in brackets.
- Remove clutch plate and hub as outlined under "Compressor Clutch Service."
- Remove shaft seal retaining ring.
- Clean inside of compressor neck area around shaft and seal seat to prevent damage to compressor from entry of dirt.
- Place seal protector tool No. J-33021, or equivalent, over end of shaft to avoid chipping ceramic seat.
- Engage knurled tangs of seal seat replacement tool No. J-23128-A, or equivalent, into recessed portion of seal seat by turning handle clockwise.
