- Remove engine cover, air cleaner and air inlet duct.
- Drain cooling system until radiator coolant level is below thermostat.
- Remove radiator hose at coolant outlet.
- Remove thermostat housing mounting bolts and ground wire.
- Remove thermostat housing, thermostat and gasket.
- Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
- On all models except 7.4L engine, torque attaching bolts to 21 ft. lbs.
- On 7.4L engine, torque attaching bolts to 27 ft. lbs.

Certain general service procedures apply, regardless of whether the brakes are vacuum or hydraulically assisted. Only top quality, clean brake fluid should be used. More seals and valves are used with power brake systems than with ordinary brakes, so an inferior brake fluid will do much more damage. For the same reason, ensure all dirt is kept out of the system. Additionally, care must be taken not to mix the fluids of the booster hydraulic system and brake hydraulic system as the fluids are not compatible.

Upon removal of starter, note if any shims are used. If shims are used, they should be installed in their original locations. After installation, if starter is noisy during cranking, remove one .015 inch double shim or add one .015 inch single shim to the outer bolt.
