- Refer to Figs. through when replacing brake shoes.
- Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assemblies.
- Loosen parking brake, then remove rear brake drums.
- Remove tension pins by pushing retainer springs while turning.
- Lower brake shoe assembly being careful not to damage wheel cylinder dust cover, then remove lower return spring.
- Disconnect parking brake cable from parking brake lever, then remove brake shoe assembly.
- Remove upper return spring, self-adjuster lever and spring, then separate brake shoes.

- Remove master cylinder as outlined under "Hydraulic Brake Systems."
- Disconnect vacuum hose from booster, then remove vacuum hose bracket.
- Remove throttle control cable bracket, then disconnect engine wire harness connectors.
- On models equipped with manual transmission, remove clutch reservoir and reservoir bracket. Do not disconnect clutch hose from reservoir.
- On all models, loosen pushrod locknut, then remove cotter pin and joint pin.
- Remove clevis from operating rod of brake booster, then four booster mounting nuts.

- Remove bleeder cap from maintenance bleeder on modulator unit, then attach a suitable wrench to bleeder.
- Connect a rubber tube to bleeder and place other end in a container, Fig. .
- While holding tube in hand, loosen maintenance bleeder 1/8- 1/4 turn and collect fluid in container. Do not loosen bleeder too much; brake fluid is under high pressure and can burst out.
- Tighten maintenance bleeder to specification.
