The control unit contains a monitoring circuit to detect any internal faults in the control unit and any electrical faults in the sensors, hydraulic modulator or signaling system.
If a fault occurs, the control unit disengages the ABS and illuminates a warning light. When the warning light comes on, a complete fault tracing procedure should be followed. The fault tracing procedure assumes that the standard braking system is fully operational.

Anti-lock Brakes -> Description
Vehicle: 2000 Volvo V40 1.9 L4 GAS
The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) uses a control unit, hydraulic modulator, transient surge protector, front speed sensors and a speedometer sensor to control wheel lock-up. The control unit receives vehicle speed, wheel speed and wheel acceleration information from the sensors, then sends the information to the hydraulic modulator. The hydraulic modulator uses this information to ensure correct hydraulic pr...

Hydraulic Brake Systems -> Description
Vehicle: 2000 Volvo V40 1.9 L4 GAS
The function of hydraulic brake system is to transmit pressure from the master cylinder to caliper pistons. The system will operate properly if fluid is tight and brake fluid cannot be compressed. Normally, brake fluid cannot be compressed. If however the fluid overheats sufficiently it can partially change to a vapor form. Vapor can be compressed and since the master cylinder has a specific volume with which to build up pressure, the compression of vapor can result in excess brake pedal travel before the system has time to develop adequate braking pressure.
Brake fluid is h...
