Brake System Bleed
- Bleed brake master cylinder as follows:
- Fill master cylinder reservoir with DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid, then depress brake pedal fully and plug master cylinder outlet fitting.
- With fitting opening plugged, release brake pedal. Perform this operation several times to fill master cylinder with brake fluid and purge all air.
- Start engine and bleed air from hydraulic lines. Refer to Figs. and , for hydraulic line bleed sequence. Ensure master cylinder reservoir is kept full during bleed procedure.

- Disconnect brake fluid sensor electrical connector from master cylinder reservoir.
- Position a drain pan under master cylinder.
- On models equipped with separately mounted reservoir, disconnect reservoir hoses from the master cylinder.
- On all models, disconnect brake lines from the master cylinder. Plug all lines and fittings.
- Remove master cylinder to brake booster attaching nuts.
- Pull master cylinder outward and away from brake booster, Fig. .
- Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

The hydraulic brake system must be bled if air has entered the system. This condition may be caused by low fluid level, a hydraulic fluid leak, the opening of a hydraulic line or replacement of a hydraulic system component. Symptoms include a loss of basic brake operation and/or a low or spongy brake pedal.
On models equipped with ABS, use a suitable filter when adding fluid to reservoir tank.
- Ensure master cylinder reservoir is full. Add suitable brake fluid as needed, and securely reinstall the master cylinder cap.
- Raise and support vehicle.
