  • Disconnect vacuum hose from brake booster.
  • Working from inside the passenger compartment, remove snap pin and operating rod clevis pin from brake pedal assembly.
  • Remove brake booster retaining nuts, then brake booster from vehicle.
  • Reverse procedure to install. Torque brake booster retaining nuts to 10-17 ft. lbs.

The brake booster is located inline between the master cylinder and the brake pedal. It serves to mechanically boost the force pushing the pistons of the master cylinder.

The brake booster consists of a power cylinder section and a power piston section. The power cylinder is made up of a front shell, rear shell and a diaphragm. The front and rear shells are connected with the diaphragm placed in between the two. The power cylinder chamber is closed to the atmosphere and the left and right chambers of the diaphragm are kept sealed.

Brake System Bleed

Two technicians are needed to bleed the brake system. Brake pedal operation must be very slow. Keep brake fluid reserve tank full to prevent air from entering the system during the bleeding procedure.

  • Connect ABS check connector diagnosis terminal to terminal No. 6. Connector is located beside driver side seat heater unit.
  • Start engine, then after ABS warning lamp goes out, depress brake pedal within 0.5 seconds.
  • Check entire brake system for fluid leaks.
