DRIVESHAFT, Replace
Vehicle: 2002 Ford Thunderbird 3.9 V8 GAS
- Raise and support vehicle.
- Remove muffler and extension pipe, then the body brace.
- Remove heat shield.
- Inspect and record driveline angles.
- Place reference marks on bolts, washers, nuts and flex coupling to transmission flange and pinion flange for installation alignment.
- Remove driveshaft to axle flange mounting nuts. Do not remove flex coupling to driveshaft mounting bolts, Fig. .
- Loosen driveshaft length adjustment nut using driveshaft coupler wrenches, tool No. 205-474, or equivalents.

CV AXLE SHAFT, Replace
Vehicle: 2002 Ford Thunderbird 3.9 V8 GAS
Halfshaft assemblies are not serviceable. If wear or damage is present, replace entire halfshaft assembly. When servicing halfshafts, ensure excessive angle is not applied to CV joints and that joints are not pulled apart or separated.
The halfshafts on models equipped with 3.9L engine are larger in diameter and are not interchangeable with halfshafts on models equipped with a 3.0L engine.
- Raise and support vehicle.
- Remove rear tires.
- Remove and discard axle wheel hub nut.
