Includes anti-lock brakes, disc, drum, power and hydraulic brake services diagnostics and procedures for domestic and imported 2002 Lincoln Continental cars and light trucks from 1990+.
Disc Brakes -> Front Disc Brakes -> Troubleshooting -> Abnormal Conditions -> Brake Booster Operation Test -> Brake Master Cylinder -> Brake Roughness -> Bypass Condition Inspection -> Lateral Runout -> Non-Pressure Leaks -> Normal Conditions -> Thickness Variation -> Wheel Bearing Looseness
Vehicle: 2002 Lincoln Continental 4.6 V8 GAS
Brake Roughness
Thickness Variation
If roughness or vibration is encountered during highway operation or if pedal pumping is experienced at low speeds, the disc may have excessive thickness variation. Measure the disc at 12 points with a micrometer at a radius approximately one inch from edge of disc. If thickness measurements vary by more than .0005 inch, replace the disc.
Lateral Runout
Excessive lateral runout of braking disc may cause a "knocking back" of the pistons, possibly creating increased pedal travel and vibration when brakes are applied.
Wheel Bearing Looseness
Adjust the w...

Hydraulic Brake Systems -> Brake System Bleed -> System Priming -> Wheel Bleeding Sequence
Vehicle: 2002 Lincoln Continental 4.6 V8 GAS
Pressure bleeding is recommended for all hydraulic brake systems. Ensure all dirt and contaminants are removed from master cylinder area prior to removing reservoir cap.
To prevent air from the pressure tank getting into the lines, do not shake the tank while air is being added to the tank or after it has been pressurized. Set the tank in the required location, bring the air hose to the tank, and do not move it during the bleeding operation. The tank should be kept at least one-third full.
On vehicles equipped with disc brakes and master cylinders without proportioners or press...

Disc Brakes -> Front Disc Brakes -> Inspection
Vehicle: 2002 Lincoln Continental 4.6 V8 GAS
Remove wheels and inspect brake disc, caliper and linings. Inspect wheel bearings and repack if required.
If the caliper is cracked or fluid leakage through the casting is evident, it must be replaced as a unit.
If caliper is removed when installing new components, clean all components in alcohol, then wipe dry using lint-free cloths. Blow out drilled passages and bores with compressed air. Inspect dust boots for punctures or tears, replace as required.
Inspect piston bores in both housings for scoring or pitting. Bores showing light scratches or corrosion can be cleaned with crocus clo...

Anti-lock Brakes -> Continental, Sable & Taurus -> Description -> ABS Module (Electronic Control Unit) -> Anti-Lock Brakes -> Continental -> Hydraulic Control Unit -> Master Cylinder -> Operation -> Pedal Travel Switch -> Sable & Taurus -> System Components -> Traction Assist -> Vacuum Booster -> Wheel Sensors
Vehicle: 2002 Lincoln Continental 4.6 V8 GAS
Continental
The anti-lock brake system prevents wheel lock-up by automatically modulating brake pressure during an emergency stop. It allows driver to maintain steering control and stop the vehicle in the shortest possible distance under most conditions. The traction control system controls wheelspin by modulating engine torque and applying or releasing appropriate rear brake to restore traction when driving on slippery or loose surfaces, Fig. .
Sable & Taurus
The anti-lock system (ABS), Fig. , controls each brake separately. The brake pedal force required to engage the system may vary...
