BRAKE SERVICE PROCEDURES FOR 2005 Chevrolet Impala AUTOMOBILES
Includes anti-lock brakes, disc, drum, power and hydraulic brake services diagnostics and procedures for domestic and imported 2005 Chevrolet Impala cars and light trucks from 1990+.
Anti-Lock Brakes -> Delphi DBC 7 -> System Service -> Alero & Grand Am -> Alero, Cavalier, Century, Grand Am, Impala, Monte Carlo, Regal & Sunbird -> Alero, Cavalier, Grand Am & Sunfire -> Alero, Grand Am & Malibu -> Automated Bleed -> BPMV Bracket -> Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (BPMV) -> Brake System Bleed -> Cavalier & Sunfire -> Century, Impala, Monte Carlo & Regal -> Component Replacement -> Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) -> Front -> Hydraulic System Flush -> Malibu -> Manual Bleed -> Manual Flush -> Pressure Flush -> Rear -> Wheel Speed Sensor
Vehicle: 2005 Chevrolet Impala SS 3.8 V6 GAS
Brake System Bleed
In most circumstances a manual brake bleed is all that is required. Automated ABS bleeding is required under the following conditions: when manual bleeding does not achieve desired pedal height or feel; brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) replacement; extreme loss of brake fluid; air ingestion is suspected.
Manual Bleed
Use suitable container to catch fluid.
- Clean reservoir cover and surrounding area.
- Remove cover, fill fluid reservoir and install cover.
- Attach one end of a clear plastic hose to rear hydraulic modulator bleeder valve, then submerge other end of hos...

Power Brake Units -> Adjustments -> AC-Delco Tandem Diaphragm Type -> Air Method -> Brake Pedal -> Gauge Method -> Pushrod -> Toyota/GM Single Diaphragm Type
Vehicle: 2005 Chevrolet Impala LS 3.8 V6 GAS
Brake Pedal
Toyota/GM Single Diaphragm Type
- With engine running and brake pedal in rest position, measure distance between face of pedal and floor mat.
- Distance should be 5.850-6.244 inches.
- If distance is not as specified, adjust pedal height as follows:
- Remove lefthand lower instrument panel trim section and air duct.
- Loosen stop lamp switch sufficiently to access pedal adjustment.
- Loosen locknut and rotate pedal pushrod as required to obtain specified pedal height. Tighten locknut.
- Adjust brake lamp switch position so plunger lightly contacts pedal stopper and brake lamps are off when pe...

Power Brake Units -> General Service
Vehicle: 2005 Chevrolet Impala SS 3.8 V6 GAS
Two basic types of power assist mechanisms are used: vacuum assist diaphragm assemblies, which use engine vacuum or, in some cases vacuum pressure developed by an external vacuum pump. The second type is a hydraulic pressure assist mechanism, which use pressure developed by an external pump (usually the power steering pump). Both systems act to increase the force exerted on the master cylinder piston by the operator. This in turn increases the hydraulic pressure delivered to the wheel cylinders while decreasing driver effort required to obtain acceptable stopping performance.
Vac...

Hydraulic Brake Systems -> Troubleshooting -> Master Cylinder Internal Fluid Leakage Check -> Road Test
Vehicle: 2005 Chevrolet Impala SS 3.8 V6 GAS
When troubleshooting the hydraulic brake system, perform the following inspections.
Master Cylinder Internal Fluid Leakage Check
Start engine and depress the brake pedal. If the pedal gradually falls under constant pressure, the hydraulic system may be leaking. Raise the vehicle on a lift and inspect all tubing lines and backing plates for signs of leakage. It may be required to lift or remove the carpeting or floor mats to inspect for boost...

Vehicle: 2005 Chevrolet Impala 3.4 V6 GAS
System Operation
Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)
The ABS system will control hydraulic pressure in the individual wheel circuits to prevent any wheel from slipping. A separate hydraulic line and specific solenoid valves are provided for each wheel. The ABS can decrease, hold or increase hydraulic pressure to each wheel brake. However, it cannot increase hydraulic pressure above what the master cylinder is transmitting.
Enhanced Traction System (ETS)
The ETS limits wheel slip during acceleration when one or more of the drive wheels are accelerating too rapidly and the brake switch is off. T...
