Starter, Replace
Vehicle: 2005 Volkswagen Phaeton W12 6.0 W12 GAS
- To allow free rotation of driveshaft, move selector lever into "N" position.
- Disconnect battery ground cables.
- Remove engine and transmission:
- Remove intake ducts between air filters and throttle valve control modules.
- Remove plenum chamber cover.
- Remove cable from terminal 30 and remove bracket with positive terminal from junction block in engine compartment, then move cables aside.
- Remove right windshield wiper motor.
- Remove transmission control module and disconnect small connectors from engine control modules.

- To allow free rotation of driveshaft, move selector lever into "N" position.
- Disconnect battery ground cables.
- Remove engine and transmission:
- Pull engine compartment cover seal off bulkhead.
- Remove covers for plenum chamber.
- Remove cable from terminal 30 and remove bracket with positive terminal from junction block in engine compartment, then move cables aside.
- Disconnect four pin electrical connector at lock carrier.
- Remove right windshield wiper motor.
- Disconnect smaller electrical connector from Engine Control Module (ECM).

- Disconnect battery ground cables.
- Remove noise insulation.
- Drain coolant into a suitable container.
- If belt is to be reused mark direction of rotation, before removing drive belt. Belt damage will result if not reinstalled in proper direction.
- Relieve drive belt tension by turning tensioner, using a suitable tool.
- Lock tensioner in place, using a suitable tool.
