Replacement

On models with anti-lock brakes, the brake booster system must be depressurized before disconnecting any hydraulic lines or fittings. Depressurize the system by pumping the brake pedal at least 25 times with the ignition in the Off position.

Before removing calipers, mark lefthand and righthand calipers so they can be installed in their original position.

Pressure bleeding is recommended for all hydraulic brake systems. Ensure all dirt and contaminants are removed from master cylinder area prior to removing reservoir cap.

To prevent air from the pressure tank getting into the lines, do not shake the tank while air is being added to the tank or after it has been pressurized. Set the tank in the required location, bring the air hose to the tank, and do not move it during the bleeding operation. The tank should be kept at least one-third full.

Pressure bleeding is recommended for all hydraulic disc brake systems.

Do not use brake fluid drained from the hydraulic system when bleeding the brakes. Ensure disc brake pistons are returned to their normal positions and the shoe and lining assemblies are properly seated. Before driving the vehicle, inspect the brake operation.

• Apply parking brake control fully with 100 lbs., foot pedal effort, then release brake control.
• Place transmission in Neutral position, then raise and support vehicle.
• With parking brake control in Off position, grasp pensioner around housing.
• Unlock clip by pulling downward with suitable hook tool place into rounded end of clip and support pensioner.

On Sable and Taurus models, the disc rotor is a hat section-type of composite steel and cast iron. A Rotunda Rotor Mounting Adapter tool No. 054-00032, or equivalent, is required for use on the brake lathe for refinishing. Failure to use the adapter will result in gouging the brake disc, making it unfit for use.
