Disc Brakes -> Rear Disc & Parking Brakes -> Brake Disc Service
Vehicle: 2008 Ford Mustang Shelby GT 4.6 V8 GAS
Disc brake service is critical because of the close tolerances required in machining the brake disc to ensure proper brake operation.
Maintaining close control of the shape of the rubbing surfaces is required to prevent brake roughness. In addition, the surface finish must be non-directional and maintained at a micro-inch finish. This is required to avoid pulls and erratic performance and promote long lining life and equal lining wear of both the lefthand and righthand brakes.
Do not attempt to refinish the rubbing surfaces unless precision equip...

Disc Brakes -> Front Disc Brakes -> Troubleshooting -> Abnormal Conditions -> Brake Booster Operation Test -> Brake Master Cylinder -> Brake Roughness -> Bypass Condition Inspection -> Lateral Runout -> Non-Pressure Leaks -> Normal Conditions -> Thickness Variation -> Wheel Bearing Looseness
Vehicle: 2008 Ford Mustang 4.0 V6 GAS
Brake Roughness
Thickness Variation
If roughness or vibration is encountered during highway operation or if pedal pumping is experienced at low speeds, the disc may have excessive thickness variation. Measure the disc at 12 points with a micrometer at a radius approximately one inch from edge of disc. If thickness measurements vary by more than .0005 inch, replace the disc.
Lateral Runout
Excessive lateral runout of braking disc may cause a knocking back of the pistons, possibly creating increased pedal travel and vibration when brakes are applied.
Wheel Bearing Looseness
Adjust the w...

Power Brake Units -> Adjustments -> Bendix System -> Single Diaphragm Booster
Vehicle: 2008 Ford Mustang Shelby GT 4.6 V8 GAS
Bendix System
- Disconnect master cylinder from booster leaving brake lines connected and secure cylinder aside.
- Start engine and operate engine at idle speed.
- With engine running, position gauge over pushrod. Gauge should bottom against booster housing with force of approximately five lbs. applied to pushrod, Fig. . Ensure pushrod is properly seated in booster when performing gauge inspection.
- If force required to seat gauge is more than five lbs., shorten length of pushrod.
- If force required to seat gauge is less than five lbs., lengthen pushrod.
- Install master cylinder and remove reservo...

Disc Brakes -> Rear Disc & Parking Brakes -> Brake System Bleed -> System Priming -> Wheel Bleeding Sequence
Vehicle: 2008 Ford Mustang GT 4.6 V8 GAS
Pressure bleeding is recommended for all hydraulic disc brake systems.
Do not use brake fluid drained from the hydraulic system when bleeding the brakes. Ensure disc brake pistons are returned to their normal positions and the shoe and lining assemblies are properly seated. Before driving the vehicle, inspect the brake operation.
Do not shake the pressure bleeder tank while air is being added or after it has been pressurized. This will prevent air from the tank getting into the lines. Set the tank in the required location, then bring the air hose to the tank. Do not move the ta...
