SERVICE BRAKES
These brakes have self-adjusting shoe mechanisms that assure correct lining-to-drum clearances at all times. The automatic adjusters operate only when the brakes are applied as the vehicle is moving rearward or when the car comes to an uphill stop.
Although the brakes are self-adjusting, an initial adjustment is necessary after the brake shoes have been relined or replaced, or when the length of the adjusting screw has been changed during some other service operation. Refer to "Installation" for this procedure.

- Remove master cylinder from vehicle.
- Remove reservoir cover and diaphragm. Discard old brake fluid in reservoir.
- Inspect cover and diaphragm. Replace if cut, cracked or deformed.
- Remove fluid level switch and proportioner valve assembly, if equipped.
- Depress primary piston and remove lock ring.
- Plug primary fluid outlet (outlet nearest to cowl when master cylinder is installed), then apply compressed air into secondary fluid outlet to remove primary and secondary pistons.

Pump brake pedal several times with engine off to deplete accumulator of fluid.
- Remove two nuts attaching master cylinder to booster, then move master cylinder away from booster with brake lines attached.
- Remove three hydraulic lines from booster. Plug and cap all lines and outlets.
- Remove retainer and washer securing booster pushrod to brake pedal arm.
- Remove four nuts attaching booster unit to dash panel.
