BRAKE DRUMS

Any time brake drums are removed for brake service, braking surface diameter should be checked with a suitable micrometer at several points to determine if they are within the safe oversize limit stamped on the brake drum outer surface. If braking surface diameter exceeds specifications, the drum must be replaced. If braking surface diameter is within specifications, drums should be cleaned and inspected for cracks, scores, deep grooves, taper, out of round and heat spotting. • Disconnect battery ground cable.
• On all models, disconnect wiring harness from RABS module.
• On Bronco II, Ranger and Explorer models, remove module to instrument panel retaining screws behind center of instrument panel.
• On Aerostar models, remove module to instrument panel anti-skid plate retaining screws on lefthand side of engine cover under instrument panel.
• On E-Series models, remove parking brake actuator assembly as follows:
• Loosen adjusting nut at equalizer.

Removal

• Drain a small amount of brake fluid from master cylinder reservoir.
• Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
• Install an eight inch C-clamp on caliper housing and tighten clamp to bottom piston(s) in cylinder bore(s), then remove clamp. Do not use screwdriver or other edged tool to pry piston(s) from rotor.
• Remove key retaining screw, then using a hammer and drift, drive out caliper support key and spring.
• On single piston calipers, push caliper downward against spindle, then rotate upper end upward and out of spindle assembly.

• Remove caliper and linings.
• Drain brake fluid from caliper housing, then position housing in a vise.
• Pad area between piston(s) and caliper bridge, then apply compressed air to caliper fluid port to remove piston(s). If piston is seized and cannot be forced from caliper, tap lightly around cylinder bore area while applying air pressure. Use caution when applying air pressure, as piston(s) may develop considerable force from pressure build-up.

During routine service operations precautions should be taken to minimize exposure.
