If a decreasing brake pedal is encountered, the power brake unit may be binding internally. To test the power brake unit for this condition proceed as follows:
- Place transmission shift lever into Neutral and start engine.
- Increase engine speed to approximately 1500 RPM, close throttle and completely depress brake pedal.
- Slowly release brake pedal and stop engine.
- Remove vacuum check valve and hose from power brake unit. Observe for backward movement of brake pedal.
- If brake pedal moves backward, power brake unit has internal binding.

- Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
- Disconnect brake hose at caliper strut, then at the brake caliper. Cap vehicle brake line.
- Remove brake pads as outlined under "Brake Pad Service".
- Remove caliper support to steering knuckle attaching bolts, then caliper support.
- Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
- Tighten bolts to specifications.
- Bleed brakes as outlined under "Brake System Bleed".

When disassembled, wash all parts in denatured alcohol or clean brake fluid only. Use an air hose to blow out all passages, orifices and valve holes. Air dry and place parts on clean paper or lint-free cloth.
