Although the brakes are self-adjusting, Fig. , an initial adjustment will be necessary after a brake repair. The initial adjustment can be obtained as follows:
- Determine inside diameter of drum brake surface using brake shoe gauge tool No. D81L-1103-A, or equivalent. Adjust brake shoe diameter to fit gauge. Hold automatic adjusting lever out of engagement while rotating adjusting screw and ensure screw turns freely.
- Install drum and wheel assembly, then adjust wheel bearings as shown in Fig. .

The hydraulic system must be depressurized before disconnecting any hydraulic lines or fittings. Depressurize the system by pumping the brake pedal a minimum of 25 times with the ignition switch in the OFF position.

- Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
- Using chisel, unstake and remove halfshaft nut and washer. Discard nut and washer.
- Remove brake pads and caliper from steering knuckle as described under "Brake Pad Service."
- Support caliper with wire strung from coil spring. Do not disconnect brake line from caliper.
- Using tie rod end separator tool No. T85M-3395-A, or equivalent, disconnect tie rod end from steering knuckle.
- Remove ball joint pinch bolt, then separate control arm from steering knuckle.
- Remove steering knuckle to strut assembly bolts.

- Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
- Remove brake drum. If brake lining is dragging on brake drum, back off brake adjustment. Refer to individual chassis chapters for procedure.
- Using suitable tool, remove hold-down retainers, springs and pins, Fig. .
- Remove brake shoes and adjuster assemblies from backing plate by lifting up and away from wheel cylinder assembly. When removing brake shoe and adjuster assemblies, use care not to bend adjusting lever.
