Bleeding the hydraulic brake system is necessary if air has entered the system. Symptoms can be noted by loss of brake operation, and/or a low or spongy brake pedal.

The hydraulic fluid is bled or flushed from the system through bleeder valves located on the calipers, wheel cylinders, and some master cylinders. When bleeding the hydraulic brake system, use only specified brake fluid. Never reuse old brake fluid removed from the system.

These brakes are equipped with self adjusting mechanisms, therefore periodic adjustments are not necessary. If stopping power is insufficient, or if brake pedal travel is excessive, brakes should be cleaned and inspected, and the self-adjusting mechanisms should be checked.

After performing brake service, adjust brake shoes as follows:

Brake System Bleed

  • If brake fluid has been drained from master cylinder, bleed as follows:
    • Fill reservoir with DOT 3 brake fluid, then depress and hold brake pedal.
    • With master cylinder outlet port plugged, release brake pedal.
    • Repeat 3 to 4 times, refilling reservoir as necessary.
  • With engine running, bleed brake lines as follows:
    • Bleed line to wheel that is diagonally opposite master cylinder.
    • Bleed line to wheel that is nearest to master cylinder.
    • Bleed line to remaining rear wheel, then to remaining front wheel.
