Brakes should be tested on dry, clean, smooth and reasonable level roadway which is not crowned. Road test brakes by making brake applications with both light and heavy pedal forces at various speeds to determine if car stops evenly and effectively.

Power Brake Unit, Replace

  • Remove master cylinder from booster as outlined under " Master Cylinder, Replace," in "Hydraulic Brakes".
  • Disconnect pushrod clevis from brake pedal arm.
  • Disconnect vacuum hose from booster.
  • Remove booster attaching nuts, then the booster assembly.
  • Reverse procedure to install, then ensure brake pedal height and pedal travel is correct as outlined under "Brake Pedal Height, Adjust," and "Brake Pedal Travel Check" in "Hydraulic Brakes" .

  • Clean any dirt from around reservoir cap. Remove cap, then drain brake fluid into appropriate container.
  • Remove reservoir connector screw, Fig. , then the reservoir.
  • Disconnect brake lines from master cylinder. Do not allow brake fluid to get on painted surfaces.
  • Remove master cylinder attaching bolts, then the master cylinder.
  • Adjust clearance of booster piston rod to master cylinder piston as follows:
    • Push piston rod several times to ensure reaction disc is in place.

Inspection

The hydraulic lines of this brake system are based on a diagonal split system. When a brake line or hose is disconnected, bleeding operation must be performed at both ends of the line disconnected.

Prior to bleeding brakes, both front and rear displacement cylinder pistons must be returned to the top-most or home position. Motor re-home cannot be performed if current diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) are present. If DTC's are present, vehicle must be repaired and DTC's cleared before performing the motor rehome function.
