Parking Brake Linings, Replace

The parking brake system is a drum type design mounted in the hubs of the rear brake rotors.

• Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
• Remove caliper as previously outlined, then the rotor assembly.
• Drain differential fluid from axle by removing cover.
• Remove lock bolt from differential pinion shaft, then the pinion shaft from differential.
• Push axle shaft inward to gain access to axle shaft C-lock, then remove C-lock.
• Remove ABS speed sensor, then the axle shaft from axle housing.

When working on or around brake assemblies, care must be taken to prevent breathing asbestos dust, as many manufacturers incorporate asbestos fibers in the production of brake linings. During routine service operations the amount of asbestos dust from brake lining wear is at a low level, due to a chemical break down during use and a few precautions will minimize exposure. Do not sand or grind brake linings unless suitable local exhaust ventilation equipment is used to prevent excessive asbestos exposure.

• Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assemblies.
• Disconnect fitting on rear brake tube from hose end fitting at frame mounted bracket. Plug end of brake tube to prevent fluid loss and entry of dirt.
• Remove horse shoe retaining clip from hose fitting and disengage hose from bracket.
• Disconnect parking cable from lever, Fig. , using care to avoid kinking or cutting cable or return spring, then remove screw from caliper key, Fig. , then remove caliper locating pins.

• Disconnect 55-pin plug from ABS module (ECU), then attach anti-lock breakout box/bleeding adapter tool No. T90P-50-ALA, or equivalent, to wiring harness 55-pin plug.
• Place bleed/harness switch in bleed position.
• Turn ignition to On position. Red Off light should turn on.
• Push motor button on adapter down to start pump motor. Red Off light will turn off and green On light will turn on. Pump motor will run for 60 seconds once motor button is pushed.
• If pump motor is turns off before 60 seconds has elapsed, push abort button and pump motor will turn off.

Pressure bleeding is recommended for all hydraulic brake systems.

The bleeding operation itself is fairly well standardized. First step in all cases is cleaning the dirt from the filler cap before removing it from the master cylinder. This should be done thoroughly.

The disc brake hydraulic system can be bled manually or with pressure bleeding equipment. The brake pedal will require more pumping and frequent checking of fluid level in master cylinder during bleeding operation.

Do not use brake fluid drained from the hydraulic system when bleeding the brakes.
