  • Clean outside of master cylinder thoroughly. Drain brake fluid from master cylinder.
  • Remove stop bolt and pressure control valves, if equipped.
  • Using a screwdriver, carefully pry up on reservoir and remove it from master cylinder body.
  • Remove fluid control valve, if equipped.
  • Depress primary piston and remove snap ring from retaining groove at open end of bore.
  • Remove primary and secondary piston assemblies from master cylinder. If secondary piston does not come out, apply air pressure to secondary outlet port to remove.

A dry surface will require a high force, while a slippery surface will require a much less force. During system operation, the driver will sense a slight brake pedal pulsation accompanied by a rise in brake pedal height and a clicking sound. The pedal effort and pedal feel during normal braking are similar to a conventional power brake system.

  • Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
  • Remove brake drum and hub as follows:
    • Remove drum retainer push nuts, then slide drum off hub, Fig. .
    • If drum is stuck to hub, use a suitable hammer to lightly tap on face of drum in flange mounting area to release.
    • If brake lining is dragging on brake drum, back off brake adjustment by holding adjustment lever off star wheel, then loosen star wheel, Fig. .
    • Remove hub nut cover and discard.
    • Remove hub nut and discard, then slide hub and one-piece bearing assembly off spindle.

  • Remove access cover from console.
  • Remove cable adjustment nut's locking clip.
  • Raise and support vehicle, then ensure rear tires turn freely.
  • Tighten cable adjustment nut until brakes drag slightly when tires rotate.
  • Loosen adjustment nut in small increments until drag just disappears.
  • Rear brakes should lock when brake control lever is pulled upward 11-16 notches.
  • Ensure parking brake operates properly.
  • Install locking clip and access cover.
