Removal
- Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
- Remove brake drum. If brake lining is dragging on brake drum, back off brake adjustment by rotating adjustment screw. Refer to individual truck chapter for procedure. If brake drum is rusted or corroded to axle flange and cannot be removed, lightly tap flange to drum mounting surface with a suitable hammer.
- Using brake spring pliers or equivalent, unhook primary and secondary return springs, Fig. . Observe location of brake parts being removed to aid during installation.

These brakes have self-adjusting shoe mechanisms that assure correct lining-to-drum clearances at all times. The automatic adjusters operate only when the brakes are applied as the vehicle is moving rearward or when the car comes to an uphill stop.
Although the brakes are self-adjusting, an initial adjustment is necessary after the brake shoes have been relined or replaced, or when the length of the adjusting screw has been changed during some other service operation.

The Rear Wheel Anti-Lock (RWAL) system, Fig. , reduces the occurrence of rear wheel lockup during severe braking by regulating rear hydraulic line pressure. Pressure applied to the rear wheel brakes is regulated by a control valve assembly located under the master cylinder. The control valve consists of a dump valve which releases hydraulic pressure into an accumulator, and an isolation valve which holds rear brake pressure. Operation of the dump valve and isolation valve is controlled by an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) which is mounted next to the master cylinder.

Removal
- Remove caliper assembly as outlined above.
- Remove inboard pad with retainer spring. Dislodge outboard pad and position caliper on the front suspension so the brake hose will not support the weight of the caliper.
- Remove two sleeves from inboard ears of the caliper.
- Remove four rubber bushings from the grooves in each of the caliper ears.
Installation
- Lubricate new sleeves, rubber bushings, bushing grooves and mounting bolt ends with Delco Silicone Lube or equivalent.
