Brake System Bleed

1992

Before bleeding the brakes, the front and rear displacement cylinder pistons must be returned to the top most position. Using a TECH 1 or equivalent scan tool, enter manual control function and apply the front and rear motors. Ensure enable relay is on.

Use only DOT 3 brake fluid from a clean and sealed container. Do not use DOT 5 brake fluid.

In order to properly service power brake systems, a thorough understanding of the various power assist systems is necessary. These systems provide a mechanical assist, acting to increase the force applied to the master cylinder piston by the driver while decreasing the effort necessary to obtain acceptable stopping performance. Excessive Pedal Travel

• Worn brake linings.
• Disc pads knock back after cornering or rough road travel.
• Piston and linings not properly seated or positioned.
• Insufficient fluid in system.
• Loose wheel bearing adjustment.
• Damaged or worn caliper piston seal.
• Improper booster pushrod adjustment.
• Pads out of flat more than .005 inch.

• Raise and support vehicle.
• Remove tire and wheel.
• Remove caliper as outlined under "Caliper Service."
• On ^K1500 and ^K2500 models, remove rotor.
• On K3500 models proceed as follows:
• Remove hub retaining nut.
• Remove four hub/rotor retaining bolts on back side of spindle.
• Using suitable wheel puller, remove rotor assembly.
• On K1500 and K2500 models, reverse procedure to install, tightening all bolts to specifications. Install caliper as outlined under "Caliper Service."
• On K3500 models, reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
• Torque hub nut to 173 ft. lbs
• Torque hub and bear...

Removal

• Remove caliper assembly as outlined above.
• Remove inboard pad with retainer spring. Dislodge outboard pad and position caliper on the front suspension so the brake hose will not support the weight of the caliper.
• Remove two sleeves from inboard ears of the caliper.
• Remove four rubber bushings from the grooves in each of the caliper ears.

Installation

• Lubricate new sleeves, rubber bushings, bushing grooves and mounting bolt ends with Delco Silicone Lube or equivalent.

• If vehicle is equipped with power brakes, remove vacuum reserve by applying brakes several times with engine off.
• Fill master cylinder reservoirs with suitable brake fluid. Be sure to always keep master cylinder reservoirs at least half full during entire bleeding procedure.
• If master cylinder is suspected to have air in the bore, it must be bled first, as follows:
• Disconnect forward brake pipe connection at master cylinder.
