Operation

The rear anti-lock brake system (RABS II) monitors rear wheel speed through a rear axle mounted sensor. If a lockup condition begins to develop, the RABS II module will control hydraulic pressure to the rear brakes, inhibiting wheel lockup.

Service Brake

The rear brake shoes adjust automatically when the vehicle is driven in reverse and the brakes are applied sharply several times. Manual adjustment is required only when brake shoes are replaced. When adjusting rear brakes, ensure parking brake is properly adjusted and equalizer is operating freely.

  • Remove caliper as described under "Caliper Service," leaving brake hose connected.
  • Secure caliper with wire so that caliper is not hanging with weight on brake hose.
  • Compress anti-rattle clip, then remove inner pad from caliper.
  • Press each ear of outer pad away from caliper, slide torque buttons out of retention notches and slide pad off caliper.
  • Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
    • Use an eight inch C-clamp and a worn inner pad or block of wood to bottom out caliper piston in bore.
    • Install new anti-rattle clip on lower end of inner pad.

Removal

  • With engine off, depress brake pedal several times to discharge the accumulator.
  • Remove master cylinder from brake booster and position up and out of the way. Do not apply booster with master cylinder removed.

Brake System Bleed

Perform this procedure only if the Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU) has been replaced.

  • Perform conventional brake system bleed procedure. Refer to "Hydraulic Brake Systems" section.
  • Connect bleeder box tool No. T90T-50-ALA and brake jumper cable tool No. T93T-50-ALA, or equivalents.
  • Press down on brake pedal and depress "VALVES" button on bleeder box. Pedal will fall.
  • Release "VALVES" button, then release the brake pedal.
  • Repeat preceding two steps.
  • Depress "MOTOR START" button and let pump motor run for one minute.
