Front & Rear Split Hydraulic Brake Systems
When the brake pedal is depressed, both the primary (front brake) and the secondary (rear brake), master cylinder pistons are moved simultaneously to exert hydraulic fluid pressure on their respective independent hydraulic systems. The fluid displacement of the two master cylinders is proportioned to fulfill the requirements of each of the two independent hydraulic brake systems, Fig. .
If a failure of a rear (secondary) brake system occurs, initial brake pedal movement causes the unrestricted secondary piston to bottom in the master cylinder...

Hydraulic Brake Systems -> Brake System Bleed -> Bench Bleed -> Manual Bleed -> Master Cylinder Bleed -> On-Vehicle Service -> Precautions -> Pressure Bleed
Vehicle: 1997 Chrysler Cirrus LXI 2.5 V6 GAS
Bleeding the hydraulic brake system is necessary if air has entered the system. Symptoms can be noted by an improper or loss of brake operation, and/or a low or spongy brake pedal.
The hydraulic fluid is bled or flushed from the system through bleeder valves located on the calipers, wheel cylinders, and some master cylinders. When bleeding the hydraulic brake system, use only specified brake fluid, never reuse old brake fluid removed from the system.
Use bleeder tank tool No. C-3496-B, or equivalent, and adapter tool No. BB400-9A, or equivalent, to pressurize hydraulic system.

In order to properly service and repair available brake systems, a thorough understanding of the power assist systems is necessary. The vacuum assist diaphragm assembly multiplies the force exerted on the master cylinder piston in order to increase the hydraulic pressure delivered to the wheel cylinders or calipers while decreasing the effort necessary to obtain acceptable stopping performance.
Vacuum assist units get their energy by opposing engine vacuum to atmospheric pressure. A piston, cylinder and flexible diaphragm utilize this energy to provide brake assistance. The diaph...
