Brake System Bleed
The base brake system must be bled anytime air is permitted to enter the hydraulic system. However, anti-lock brake system components should only be bled if the hydraulic control unit has been removed or if there is reason to believe that air has entered the unit. The ABS portion of the braking system must be bled separately. Under most circumstances, only the base brake system will require bleeding. - Raise and support vehicle, allowing rear suspension to hang free.
- Remove rear wheel and tire assemblies.
- Using an appropriate jack, support rear axle.
- Disconnect track bar from rear axle, then the shock absorbers.
- Loosen, but do not remove, both leaf spring to front spring hanger pivot bolts.
- Loosen adjustment nut on actuator, Fig. .
- Ensure hooked end of actuator is properly seated in clip on valve lever and clip is properly positioned on lever of valve.

- With engine stopped, pump brake pedal four or five times to deplete vacuum in power booster.
- Disconnect brake lines at master cylinder.
- Remove ground wire from combination valve bracket.
- Remove master cylinder retaining nuts, Fig. .
- Slide combination valve bracket off cylinder mounting studs. Loosen or disconnect brake lines at rear anti-lock valve and combination valve, if required.
- Remove master cylinder.
- Reverse procedure to install. Tighten master cylinder mounting nuts and fluid line nuts as specified in Fig. .

Any time the brake drums are removed for brake service, the braking surface diameter should be checked with a suitable brake drum micrometer at several points to determine if they are within the safe oversize limit stamped on the brake drum outer surface. If the braking surface diameter exceeds specifications, the drum must be replaced.
