Conventional Brake System

  • Fill master cylinder reservoir with brake fluid.
  • Raise and support vehicle.
  • Position drain pan under righthand rear wheel.
  • Have an assistant depress brake pedal with slow, even pressure and hold it down. Do not depress brake pedal to end of master cylinder stroke.
  • Open bleed valve one full turn. Watch for air bubbles in fluid and listen for air escaping from system.
  • With brake pedal still depressed, close bleeder valve.
  • Have an assistant pump brake pedal several times. Do not depress brake pedal fully to end of master cylinder piston stroke.

Disc Brakes -> Brake Pad Service -> Front -> Rear
Vehicle: 1999 Acura RL 3.5 V6 GAS

Front

  • Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assemblies.
  • Remove pin bolt and pivot caliper up away from rotor.
  • Remove brake pad shims and pads, Figs. through .
  • Clean caliper and inspect for excessive wear or damage.
  • Install pad retainers, shims and pads.
  • Back out bleed screw and push in piston to allow caliper to fit over pads. Tighten bleed screw
  • Pivot caliper into position, install pin bolt and tighten.

Rear

  • Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assemblies.

  • Remove bleeder cap from the maintenance bleeder on modulator.
  • Connect rubber hose to the maintenance bleeder, place other end in suitable container.
  • Loosen maintenance bleeder 1/8 to 1/4 turn to collect fluid in container, Fig. . Do not loosen maintenance bleeder more than 1/4 turn, brake fluid is under high pressure.
  • Tighten maintenance bleeder.
  • Start engine and allow to idle for one minute, then check fluid level
  • Repeat steps three through five several times in order to drain remaining fluid from modulator.
  • Tighten maintenance...
