• Remove driver and passenger air bags as outlined under .
• Remove steering column as follows:
• Remove steering wheel and lower steering column trim moldings.
• Remove steering column release lever by unscrewing from column.
• Rotate ignition switch lock cylinder to Run position.

Removal

• Clamp compressor in suitable support, then remove clutch hub as outlined under "Clutch Hub & Pulley, Replace."
• Remove shaft seal felt from nose of compressor.
• Remove snap ring as follows:
• Insert tip of snap ring remover tool No. T89P-19623-DH, or equivalent, into one eye of the snap ring, Fig. .
• Rotate snap ring until eye is close to compressor shaft, Fig. .
• Keeping tool shaft against side of nose opening, quickly pull upward and remove snap ring, Fig. .

Testing the refrigerant system for leaks is one of the most important phases of troubleshooting. One or more of the methods outlined will prove useful in detecting leaks or checking connections if service work is performed. Before beginning any leak test, attach a manifold gauge set and note pressure. If little or no pressure is indicated, a partial charge must be installed. Check all connections, compressor head gasket, oil filler plug and compressor shaft seal for leaks.

For R-134a system an electronic type leak detector is recommended.

• Drain coolant into suitable container.
• Remove fan and fan clutch.
• Remove accessory drive belt.
• Remove lower radiator hose from water pump.
• Disconnect engine harness from water pump mounting stud and water bypass tube.
• Remove A/C compressor support bracket.
• Remove bolts and pulley from water pump.
• Remove bypass tube from water pump.
• Remove bolts (A) and stud bolts (B), Fig. , from water pump, then remove pump from cover.

Product Compatibility

A/C Refrigerant Oil

Before replenishing refrigerant oil, ensure product compatibility with the system being serviced. Refer to "A/C Data" for specifications.

Engine Coolant

Before adding or replacing engine coolant, ensure product compatibility with the system being serviced. If using orange silicate-free coolant, do not mix with green silicated coolant. If mixed, premature engine, heater core or radiator corrosion may result.
