Power Brake Units -> Description -> Bendix Diaphragm Types -> Bendix Hydro-Boost System -> Operation -> Vacuum Assist Diaphragm Type
Vehicle: 1999 Mercury Cougar 2.5 V6 GAS

Vacuum Assist Diaphragm Type

The vacuum assist diaphragm assembly multiplies the force exerted on the master cylinder piston in order to increase the hydraulic pressure delivered to the wheel cylinders while decreasing the effort necessary to obtain acceptable stopping performance.

Vacuum assist units get their energy by opposing engine vacuum to atmospheric pressure. A piston, cylinder and flexible diaphragm utilize this energy to provide brake assistance. The diaphragm is balanced with engine vacuum until the brake pedal is depressed, allowing atmospheric pressure to unbalance the u...

Brake Roughness

Thickness Variation

If roughness or vibration is encountered during highway operation or if pedal pumping is experienced at low speeds, the disc may have excessive thickness variation. Measure the disc at 12 points with a micrometer at a radius approximately one inch from edge of disc. If thickness measurements vary by more than .0005 inch, replace the disc.

Lateral Runout

Excessive lateral runout of braking disc may cause a "knocking back" of the pistons, possibly creating increased pedal travel and vibration when brakes are applied.

Wheel Bearing Looseness

Adjust the w...

Fluid spilling from boot center hole, or wetness around wheel cylinder ends indicates cup leakage and need for wheel cylinder replacement. A small amount of fluid is always present and is considered normal, acting as lubricant for cylinder pistons.

Anti-lock Brakes -> Contour, Cougar & Mystique -> Description
Vehicle: 1999 Mercury Cougar 2.5 V6 GAS

The anti-lock brake system operates using a control unit and sensors as follows, wheel lock-up is prevented during heavy braking by modulating brake pressure. The system permits the driver to maintain steering control and stop vehicle in the shortest possible distance under most conditions. During the anti-lock brake operation, the driver will sense a pulsation in the brake pedal and hear a clicking sound. The pedal effort and pedal feel during normal braking are similar to that of a conventional power brake system.
