  • Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel.
  • Remove drum screws.
  • Release parking brake lever.
  • Remove parking brake lever cover, then loosen parking brake cable locking nut.
  • To increase clearance between shoe and drum, proceed as follows:
    • Remove backing plate plug.
    • Insert screwdriver into plug hole till its tip contacts shoe hold-down spring, then push hold-down spring as shown, Fig. .
  • Remove brake drum by fitting two 8 mm bolts into holes on drum and extracting drum off wheel hub.
  • Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

Road Test

Brakes should be tested on dry, clean, smooth and reasonable level roadway which is not crowned. Road test brakes by making brake applications with both light and heavy pedal forces at various speeds to determine if car stops evenly and effectively.

Removal

  • Remove approximately 2/3 of brake fluid from master cylinder.
  • Raise and support vehicle.
  • Mark relationship between front wheel and axle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
  • Remove inlet fitting attaching bolt, copper washer and inlet fitting from caliper housing. Plug opening in inlet fitting to prevent fluid loss and contamination. Do not crimp brake hose, as this may damage internal structure of hose. If only shoe and lining assemblies are to be replaced, do not disconnect brake line fitting from caliper.
