Pressure bleeding is recommended for all hydraulic systems. However, if a pressure bleeder is unavailable, use the following procedure. Brake fluid damages painted surfaces. Immediately clean any spilled fluid.
- Remove vacuum reserve by pumping brakes several times with engine off.
- Fill master cylinder reservoir with clean brake fluid. Do not let reservoir fall below half full during bleeding procedure.

- Inspect brake drum, shoes, strut, auto adjuster lever, springs and backing plate for wear, distortion, cracks or other abnormal conditions.

Removal
- Siphon 2/3 of brake fluid from master cylinder.
- Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheels.
- Install two wheel lug nuts to retain rotor, then remove caliper mounting bolts, Fig. .
- Remove union nut securing brake hose to caliper and drain fluid into a suitable container. If caliper is only being removed for brake pad replacement, do not disconnect brake hose.
- Compress piston as needed, then remove caliper. If brake hose remains connected, secure caliper aside to prevent hose from being stretched.
