  • Place transmission in gear and release parking brake control. Front parking brake cable must be in fully released position.
  • Raise and support vehicle.
  • Disconnect speedometer cable from lefthand side of parking brake assembly.
  • Loosen clevis jam nut and remove locking pin from clevis pin, Fig. .
  • Remove front parking brake cable and conduit from transmission case.
  • Disconnect driveshaft at output flange, then secure out of way.

  • Remove and discard a portion of brake fluid from master cylinder.
  • Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
  • Use an eight inch c-clamp to move piston back into its bore as follows:
    • Place head of c-clamp against caliper and screw end of c-clamp against outer pad below spring clip.
    • Tighten c-clamp until torque buttons just clear caliper (approximately 1/8 inch). Remove c-clamp.
  • Clean excess dirt from around pin tabs, then use caliper pin remover tool No. D89T-2196-A, or equivalent, and light hammer to drive caliper pin from caliper as follows:

Brake System Bleed

Aerostar & 1997 Ranger

The RABS II master cylinder and hydraulic control unit must be bled using anti-lock brake adapter tool No. T90P-50-ALA and jumper tool No. T93T-50-ALA, or equivalents. If this procedure is not followed, air will be trapped in the hydraulic control unit and will contribute to improper brake pedal feel.

Bleed system as follows:

  • Place bleed/harness switch on bleed adapter tool to bleed position.
  • Turn ignition switch to On position. At this point, the red OFF indicator should turn on.
