Brake Drums

Any time the brake drums are removed for brake service, the braking surface diameter should be checked with a suitable brake drum micrometer at several points to determine if they are within the safe oversize limit stamped on the brake drum outer surface. If the braking surface diameter exceeds specifications, the drum must be replaced. If the braking surface diameter is within specifications, drums should be cleaned and inspected for cracks, scores, deep grooves, taper, out of round and heat spotting. Removal

• Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheels.
• Disconnect and cap flexible brake line.
• On 1997 models, remove caliper retaining clips and anti-rattle springs.
• On 1998-2001 models, remove caliper retaining bolts.
• On all models, remove caliper from disc by slowly sliding caliper assembly out and away from disc.
• On 1997 models, remove inboard and outboard brake pads from caliper as outlined under "Brake Pad Service."

• Remove outboard pad by prying between the pad and the caliper fingers, as flanges on outboard pad retain caliper firmly. Caliper should be supported to avoid damage to flexible brake hose.
• Remove inboard brake pad from the adapter.

1998-2001

• Remove caliper assembly as outlined under "Caliper Service."
• Remove inboard and outboard pads from caliper adapter.
• Remove anti-rattle springs from caliper adapter.

The only serviceable power brake booster components are the vacuum hose and the check valve. The power brake booster must be serviced as an assembly. If diagnosis indicates a power brake booster fault condition, the unit must be replaced as an assembly.
