Cooling Fan Thermo Switch

  • Drain coolant into a suitable container, then remove switch from radiator.
  • Immerse switch sensor in temperature-controlled solution and inspect for continuity between switch terminals as solution is heated and cooled.
  • Meter should indicate no continuity with temperature below 180°F. First stage contacts should close when temperature is 183-206°F, and second stage contacts should close when temperature is 201-226°F.
  • If switch fails to perform as outlined, replace thermo switch.

  • Mark serpentine belt running directions.
  • Remove drive belts, then the belt tensioners.
  • Remove crankshaft damper and pulley, then the water pump pulley.
  • Remove timing belt covers as required.
  • Disconnect water pump hoses.
  • Remove and discard water pump attaching bolts.
  • Remove water pump, Fig. .
  • Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
    • Torque water pump to 15 ft. lbs., then rotate an additional 90°.
    • Torque belt tensioner to 15 ft. lbs.

Cabrio

The three speed electric cooling fan is controlled by the cooling fan control module through a coolant temperature sensor mounted in the radiator and a second thermo sensor mounted in the coolant manifold and by the A/C control system and the after run control module. Various fan speeds are chosen depending on coolant temperature and refrigerant pressure when the A/C system is On. The cooling fan can also be switched on after the ignition is turned Off if coolant temperature rises above 198°F by the after run control module to prevent hot soak starting problems.
