Replacement

  • Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel.
  • Disconnect and cap brake hose.
  • Remove sleeve bolts, sleeves, boot pins and bushings, then the caliper body from torque member.
  • Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
    • Replace bushing and pin boot.
    • Tighten sleeve bolts to specifications.
    • Bleed brake system as outlined in "Brake System Bleed."

  • Remove guide/slide pins, Figs. through .
  • Lift caliper assembly and support to frame using suitable wire. Guide pin is coated with special grease. Be careful not to remove grease and ensure no dirt adheres to pin.
  • Remove inner and outer shims, anti-squeak shims and pad assembly.

The hydraulic brake system must be bled if air has entered the system. This could be caused by an open in the system, or replacement of a hydraulic system component. Symptoms include loss of brake operation, and a low or spongy brake pedal.

On models with ABS, use a suitable filter when adding fluid to reservoir tank.

  • Ensure master cylinder reservoir is full. Add suitable brake fluid as needed, and securely install the master cylinder cap.
  • Raise and support vehicle.
  • Position a drain pan under the wheel being bled.

Service Brakes

Rear brakes should be adjusted after rear brake service or before adjusting parking brake. These brakes have self-adjusting shoe mechanisms that maintain correct brake lining to drum clearances at all times. The automatic self-adjusting mechanism operates whenever the parking brake lever is applied on all models except the Duo-Servo type. These contain a self-adjusting mechanism which operates when the brakes are applied as the vehicle is moving rearward.
