System Operation

Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)

The ABS system will control hydraulic pressure in the individual wheel circuits to prevent any wheel from slipping. A separate hydraulic line and specific solenoid valves are provided for each wheel. The ABS can decrease, hold or increase hydraulic pressure to each wheel brake. However, it cannot increase hydraulic pressure above what the master cylinder is transmitting.

Removal

  • Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assembly.
  • Mark drum and axle hub, then remove brake drum. If brake lining is dragging on brake drum, back off brake adjustment by rotating adjustment screw. Refer to individual vehicle chapter for procedure. If brake drum is rusted or corroded to axle flange and cannot be removed, lightly tap axle flange to drum mounting surface with a suitable hammer.

Accessing Diagnostic Trouble Codes

Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) may be read using a suitably programed scan tool. There are no provisions for flash code diagnostics.

  • Turn ignition switch to Off position.
  • Connect suitably programmed scan tool connected to Data Link Connector (DLC), located under lefthand side of instrument panel below steering column.
  • Turn ignition switch to On position.
  • Select scan tool Special Functions.
  • Select and run Automated Test.
  • Record all DTCs.
