- Remove one wheel bolt, then push self adjusting wedge upwards with a suitable screwdriver through wheel bolt hole to back off brake shoes, Fig. .
- Install wheel bolt and tighten to specifications, then remove grease cap with puller tool No. VW 637/2, or equivalent.
- Remove cotter pin and axle nut, then pull off brake drum.
- Remove spring retainer by pressing it against spring and turning 1/4 turn.

Component Replacement
Bosch 5.3, ITT Mark 20 and Teves model 20 ABS control modules are coded to the vehicle. Replacement control modules must be coded after installation. Refer to "Coding Control Module" for procedures.
Prior to servicing the ABS system, always turn the ignition off.
The ABS control unit must never be exposed to temperatures greater than 185°F for more than two hours, or 203°F for even short time periods. The ABS control unit must be unplugged if an electric welder is to be used on the vehicle.

- Connect suitable bottle with transparent hose to each wheel.
- Pump brake pedal several times, then hold.
- Open and close bleeder screw, then release pedal.
- Bleed brake system using the following sequence:
- Righthand rear caliper/wheel cylinder.
- Lefthand rear caliper/wheel cylinder.
- Righthand front caliper.
- Lefthand front caliper.
- Repeat procedure until brake fluid flows without air bubbles.
