- Install wheel bolt and tighten to specifications, then remove grease cap with puller tool No. VW 637/2, or equivalent.
- Remove cotter pin and axle nut, then pull off brake drum.

- Remove noise insulator panel retainers, then insulators.
- Mark position of bolts attaching ball joints to control arms, then remove bolts and separate ball joint from control arm. Discard bolts.
- Remove drive axle to transaxle drive flange attaching bolts.

- Loosen the wheel lug nuts.
- Raise and support the vehicle with jack stands.
