  • Remove one wheel bolt, then push self adjusting wedge upwards with a suitable screwdriver through wheel bolt hole to back off brake shoes, Fig. .
  • Install wheel bolt and tighten to specifications, then remove grease cap with puller tool No. VW 637/2, or equivalent.
  • Remove cotter pin and axle nut, then pull off brake drum.
  • Remove spring retainer by pressing it against spring and turning 1/4 turn.

Conventional Bleed

  • Connect suitable bottle with transparent hose to each wheel.
  • Pump brake pedal several times, then hold.
  • Open and close bleeder screw, then release pedal.
  • Bleed brake system using the following sequence:
    • Righthand rear caliper/wheel cylinder.
    • Lefthand rear caliper/wheel cylinder.
    • Righthand front caliper.
    • Lefthand front caliper.
  • Repeat procedure until brake fluid flows without air bubbles.
