DRIVESHAFT U-JOINT, Replace
Vehicle: 2004 Ford Escape 3.0 V6 GAS
Do not reuse the bolts and cap straps for either the center U-joint or the rear U-joint. Install new bolts and cap straps or damage to the vehicle may occur. There is a difference in length of the head of the replacement yoke strap bolts from the production bolts. The longer head pinion bolts can be used in either location.

CV AXLE SHAFT, Replace -> Front -> Rear
Vehicle: 2004 Ford Escape 2.0 L4 GAS
Front
- Raise and safely support the vehicle.
- Remove front wheel assembly.
- Remove front brake disc.
- Remove and discard front axle wheel hub nut.
- Remove tie rod end nut, then remove tie rod end.
- Separate the lower ball joint from the front wheel knuckle.
- Separate halfshaft from front wheel knuckle, using suitable tool.
- Remove the halfshaft.
- Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
- Torque tie rod end nut to 41 ft. lbs.
- Torque lower ball joint pinch bolt to 52 ft. lbs.
- Torque front halfshaft hub nut to 214 ft. lbs.
- Torque wheel nuts to 98 ft. lbs.

Do not swap driveshaft assembles from different vehicles. The Escape Hybrid drive shaft is longer than the driveshaft in the Escape/Mariner and is not interchangeable.
- With vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
- Remove ground strap bolt.
- Remove and discard 6 front driveshaft-to-transfer case bolts and washers. Do not reuse CV joint bolts and washers. Install new bolts and washers or damage to vehicle may occur.
- Index-mark front driveshaft to center bearing.
