Vehicle: 2004 Volkswagen Golf 1.9 L4 DIESEL
- Pull off intake hose connector and hose from mass airflow sensor.
- Remove bolts and air filter housing.
- Disconnect battery ground cable.
- Remove fuse holder cover.
- Remove fuse holder mounting bolt, then pivot fuse holder, with fuses still connected, rearward away from battery.
- Disconnect battery positive cable.
- Remove heat shield cover, if required.
- Remove bolt, retaining bracket and battery hold-down bracket.
- Disconnect central gas vent hose from top cover, if required.
- Remove battery from vehicle.
- Remove bolts and battery carrier.

Vehicle: 2004 Volkswagen Golf R32 3.2 V6 GAS
- Disconnect battery ground cable.
- Bring lock carrier into service position:
- Remove front bumper.
- Remove noise insulation.
- Remove intake air duct between lock carrier and air cleaner housing at lock carrier.
- Remove seal on lock carrier.
- Remove one bolt from each side of frame rails and screw in suitable guide bolts into threaded holes.
- Remove lock carrier mounting bolts, then pull lock carrier toward front of vehicle.
- Secure lock carrier with guide bolts.
- Remove coolant fan.
- Remove EVAP canister upward from catches and move aside with hoses connected.
