Pressure Bleed

Use bleeder tank tool No. C-3496-B, or equivalent, and adapter tool No. BB400-9A, or equivalent, to pressurize hydraulic system.

Normal pressure bleeder pressure should not be more than 35 psi. On models equipped with plastic reservoirs, do not exceed 25 psi bleeding pressure.

  • Attach suitable clear plastic hose to bleeder screw and submerge other end into clear container with clean brake fluid.
  • Open bleeder screw at least one full turn.
  • Bleed 4-8 ounces of fluid through system until air free flow is maintained.
  • Repeat procedure at all screws.

  • Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.
  • Retract caliper piston in bore by grasping rear of caliper and pulling outward working with guide pins. Never push on piston directly.
  • Remove caliper guide pin bolt by holding it while turning bolt.
  • Rotate caliper upward. Do not overextend brake hose.
  • Remove brake pads from caliper, then the anti-rattle clips.
  • Remove caliper to steering knuckle guide pin bolts.
  • Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:

Master Cylinder

The master cylinder is a center valve master cylinder used for all applications. The brake fluid reservoir mounted on top and brake fluid level switch is mounted on the side of the reservoir.

The reservoir is indexed to prevent installation in the wrong direction. The cap diaphragm is slit to allow atmospheric pressure to equalize on both sides of diaphragm.

Decreasing Brake Pedal Travel

If a decreasing brake pedal is encountered, the power brake unit may be binding internally. To test the power brake unit for this condition proceed as follows:

  • Place transmission shift lever into Neutral and start engine.
  • Increase engine speed to approximately 1500 RPM, close throttle and completely depress brake pedal.
  • Slowly release brake pedal and stop engine.
  • Remove vacuum check valve and hose from power brake unit. Observe for backward movement of brake pedal.
