The single and tandem vacuum boosters, Figs. and , are self contained vacuum hydraulic power braking units. These are vacuum suspended units that use vacuum and atmospheric pressure for their power.
On models equipped with gasoline engines, vacuum is supplied through a fitting in the intake manifold. On models equipped with diesel engines, vacuum is supplied through a vacuum pump.

Brake Linings
Remove both front wheels and inspect the brake discs, calipers and linings. (Wheel bearings should be inspected at this time and repacked if required).
Do not get any oil or grease on the linings. It is recommended that both front wheel sets be replaced whenever a respective shoe and lining is worn or damaged. Inspect and, if required, replace rear brake linings also.
If the caliper is cracked or fluid leakage through the casting is evident, it must be replaced as a unit.

- Remove air cleaner housing, if required.
- Remove brake master cylinder attaching nuts.
- Position brake master cylinder aside.
- Disconnect booster vacuum hose.
- Disconnect power distribution box auxiliary relay and set aside.
- Remove fuse panel cover.
- Remove brake pedal position switch self-locking pin.
- Remove brake pedal position switch and brake booster pushrod from brake pedal pin.
- Remove power brake booster nuts.
- Remove power brake booster.
- Reverse procedure to install. Torque booster mounting nuts to 16-21 ft. lbs.

- Connect suitable scan tool to DLC located under dash, and follow on screen procedure.
- Clean all dirt from master cylinder reservoir cap area, remove cap and top up brake fluid.
- Bleed brake system in order outlined on scan tool.
- Attach a rubber hose to bleeder screw.
- Have an assistant pump and hold pressure on brake pedal.
- Loosen bleeder screw until a stream of brake fluid comes out.
- While assistant maintains pressure on brake pedal, tighten bleeder screw.
- Repeat until clear, bubble free fluid comes from bleeder screw.
