Power Brake Units -> Bendix Vacuum Brake Booster -> Description
Vehicle: 2008 Ford Escape XLT 3.0 V6 GAS
The single and tandem vacuum boosters, Figs. and , are self contained vacuum hydraulic power braking units. These are vacuum suspended units that use vacuum and atmospheric pressure for their power.
On models equipped with gasoline engines, vacuum is supplied through a fitting in the intake manifold. On models equipped with diesel engines, vacuum is supplied through a vacuum pump.

Brake System Bleed
Except Hybrid
Anti-Lock Brakes
Bleeding the hydraulic control unit (HCU) is only required when removing or installing the HCU or master cylinder, or when opening the lines to the HCU. Carrying out the system bleed function drives trapped air from the HCU. Subsequent bleeding removes air from the brake hydraulic system through the bleeder screws.
- Connect suitable diagnostic scan tool.
- Access "System Bleed Function." Go to Tool Tab-Chassis-Braking-ABS Service Bleed and follow directions on scan tool.
- Manually bleed brake hydraulic system as outlined under "Manual Bleed."

Front
When mechanical force is applied by the driver to the brake pedal, the force is converted into hydraulic pressure by the master cylinder. The hydraulic force is directed to the front disc brake calipers and transferred to the brake pads. The brake pads are then forced against the brake friction surfaces by the brake caliper pistons. The friction of the brake pads on the brake disc causes the slowing of wheel rotation and the vehicle. Fig. .
