Two basic types of power assist mechanisms are used: vacuum assist diaphragm assemblies, which use engine vacuum or in some cases vacuum pressure developed by an external vacuum pump. The second type is a hydraulic pressure assist mechanism, which use pressure developed by an external pump (usually the power steering pump). Both systems act to increase the force exerted on the master cylinder piston by the operator. Disc Brakes -> GM Single Piston -> Caliper Service -> Assemble -> AURA, Cobalt, G5, Malibu, Solstice & SKY -> Disassemble -> Replacement

Replacement
- Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assemblies.
- Install and tighten two wheel nuts opposite to retain rotor to hub.
- Tighten suitable C-clamp to compress piston into caliper bore.
- Remove mounting bolt and brake hose from caliper, Fig. .
- Remove and discard copper brake hose gaskets.
- Cap opening in brake caliper and brake hose.
- Remove guide pin bolts, caliper and bracket.
- Reverse procedure to install.
Disassemble
- Remove caliper piston from bore using compressed air through fluid inlet hole.

- Place parking brake lever to highest position.
- Lift equalizer cable over parking brake indicator switch and swing forward. Pull cable down and out of parking brake lever.
