Pressure bleeding is recommended for all hydraulic brake systems. Ensure all dirt and contaminants are removed from master cylinder area prior to removing reservoir cap.

To prevent air from the pressure tank getting into the lines, do not shake the tank while air is being added to the tank or after it has been pressurized. Set the tank in the required location, bring the air hose to the tank, and do not move it during the bleeding operation. The tank should be kept at least one-third full.

• Release parking brake.
• Raise and support vehicle, then remove tire and wheel assemblies.
• On models equipped with anti-lock brakes, remove wheel speed sensor.
• On all models, remove brake drum and wheel hub.
• Remove brake shoe hold down springs and pins, Fig. .
• Disconnect brake shoes from wheel cylinders. Hold wheel cylinder pistons in place with suitable rubber bands.

On Sable, Taurus and Taurus X models,the disc rotor is a hat section-type of composite steel and cast iron. A Rotunda Rotor Mounting Adapter tool No. 054-00032, or equivalent, is required for use on the brake lathe for refinishing. Failure to use the adapter will result in gouging the brake disc, making it unfit for use.

Hydraulic & Electronic Control Unit

The ABS control module and hydraulic unit are integrated into one assembly. The unit consists of an aluminum block of solenoid valves, pump motor and ABS control module.

The ABS control module continuously monitors and compares wheel speed information for each wheel. When the module determines that a wheel lockup is going to occur, brake pressure is modulated to the appropriate wheel. • Depress brake pedal several times to exhaust system vacuum.
• Disconnect master cylinder brake lines and electrical connectors.
• Disconnect hydraulic control unit supply hose at master cylinder. Secure hose aside.
• Remove two mounting bolts, then secure proportioning valve and tubes aside.
• Remove mounting nuts and master cylinder.
• Reverse procedure to install.

Power brake operation concerns should be handled as if two separate systems exist.

• Inspect for faults in hydraulic system first.
• If hydraulic system is satisfactory, inspect power brake circuit.
• Press brake pedal firmly and then start engine.
• Pedal should fall away slightly and less pressure should be needed to maintain pedal in any position.
• Install of suitable pressure gauge in brake hydraulic system.
