DESCRIPTION

Two coolant fans, wired in parallel, operate whenever cooling is required.

The powertrain control module (PCM) has two coolant fan control terminals: one for high speed and one for low speed. When the PCM's low speed control closes at connector C3, terminal C4, it grounds the low speed coolant relay coil. When the ignition switch is in the RUN position and the relay contacts close, voltage is supplied to the coolant fans. The coolant fan resistors drop the voltage to the lefthand coolant fan, causing it to run in low speed. The righthand c...

The Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) can maintain enough voltage to cause air bag deployment for up to 10 minutes after the ignition is turned Off and the battery is disconnected. Servicing the Supplemental air bag (SIR) system during this period may result in accidental deployment and personal injury.

The coolant fan is controlled by the ECM. In the 6 cylinder, the coolant fan is also controlled by the redundant cooling fan switch. When the ECM grounds circuit 335, the coolant fan relay is energized and battery voltage is applied to the coolant fan. If the ECM fails on the 6 cylinder engine, the redundant coolant fan switch will ground the 335 circuit and energize the coolant fan relay. The ECM will ground the coolant fan relay when the coolant temperature sensor indicates the coola...

Vehicle: 1992 Chevrolet Cavalier RS 3.1 V6 GAS

DESCRIPTION

The coolant fan is controlled by the coolant fan relay. The coolant fan relay is electrically operated by the ECM. The ECM receives input signal from the coolant temperature sensor, vehicle speed sensor and the A/C mode selector. The ECM activates the coolant fan relay when engine coolant, which is sensed by the coolant temperature sensor, is above 227°F, when A/C is turned on and when coolant temperature sensor fails. Any of these input signals causes the ECM to ground circuit 335. With circuit 335 grounded, the coolant fan relay is energized and its contacts cl...

DESCRIPTION

2.5L (VIN R) Engine

The coolant fan is turned on and off by the ECM, based on inputs from the coolant temperature sensor, vehicle speed sensor and the A/C system. Battery voltage is applied at all times to terminal A of the coolant fan relay and when the ignition switch is turned to the RUN position, voltage is applied to terminal D of the relay. The ECM energizes the coolant fan relay by grounding the dark green/yellow wire circuit (335). The relay energizes and battery voltage is applied to the coolant fan. The ECM opens circuit 335 to de-energize the rela...
