DESCRIPTION
The coolant fan is controlled by the coolant fan relay. The coolant fan relay is electrically operated by the ECM. The ECM receives input signals from the coolant temperature sensor, vehicle speed sensor and A/C mode selector. The ECM will activate the coolant fan relay when engine temperature is above 227°F, air conditioning is turned on, or the coolant temperature sensor fails. This system uses two coolant fans, wired in parallel, both fans run whenever cooling is required.
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has two coolant fan outputs, one each for high and low speed. When PCM low speed output is turned on at connector C2 (terminal 11), it grounds the low speed coolant fan relay's coil. If ignition switch is in the RUN position, the relay's contacts close, completing the circuit to the cooling fans.
