  • Check fuse in transient surge protector
  • Check all connectors, wires and ground connections for ABS System.

  • Raise vehicle and remove wheels.
  • Disconnect brake lines. Before loosening mounting bolts, loosen all bleeder screws.
  • Remove caliper mounting bolts and remove caliper. Do not loosen bridge bolts.
  • Remove retaining ring and rubber dust cover from each caliper piston, Fig. . Place a thick piece of wood between pistons and apply air pressure to brake line connection of caliper to blow pistons out. Remove seals. The caliper must not be separated or leaks may result after reassembly.
  • Coat pistons and cylinders with brake fluid before assembling.

  • Raise car and remove wheels.
  • Remove hairpin shaped locking clips for guide pins. Tap out one of guide pins while holding damper springs in place. Remove springs and other guide pin.
  • Pull out pads using puller tool No. 2917, or equivalent.
  • Carefully clean out cavity in which pads are located. Replace any dust covers that are damaged. If dirt has penetrated into cylinder due to a damaged cover, recondition brake caliper. Check brake disc and resurface if necessary.

The control unit contains a monitoring circuit to detect any internal faults in the control unit and any electrical faults in the sensors, hydraulic modulator or signaling system.

If a fault occurs, the control unit disengages the ABS and illuminates a warning light. When the warning light comes on, a complete fault tracing procedure should be followed. The fault tracing procedure assumes that the standard braking system is fully operational.

The function of hydraulic brake system is to transmit pressure from the master cylinder to caliper pistons. The system will operate properly if fluid is tight and brake fluid cannot be compressed. Normally, brake fluid cannot be compressed. If however the fluid overheats sufficiently it can partially change to a vapor form. Vapor can be compressed and since the master cylinder has a specific volume with which to build up pressure, the compression of vapor can result in excess brake pedal travel before the system has time to develop adequate braking pressure.
