Because the brakes are self-adjusting, it is impossible to tell from the brake pedal stroke whether the linings are worn. The lining thickness should be checked at specified intervals as outlined in "Vehicle Maintenance Schedule."

When vehicle is serviced, the brake pads must be replaced before lining thickness falls below .2 inches (5 mm).

• Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel.
• Press piston back with suitable pliers (1), then remove clip from caliper(2), Fig. .

Parking Brake Lever

• Raise rear seat, then pry adjusting device apart.
• Insert a .08 inch feeler gauge between parking brake lever and stop on brake caliper.
• Screw locknut against adjusting sleeve until feeler gauge drops out.
• Apply and release parking brake lever a few times to settle adjusting device.
• Ensure clearance between lever and stop is .02-.08 inch.
• Lower rear seat.

Radio Anti-Theft Lock

Radio and cassette player are equipped with an electronic four-digit anti-theft lock. This four-digit code is programmed at manufacturing and cannot be changed. If the battery is disconnected for more than three minutes, if unit is removed or if otherwise cut off from power, the four-digit code must be entered with the quick-selection buttons as follows:

• Turn radio on, then, when display shows "Code In," enter four-digit code with quick-selection buttons. If code is correct, last-tuned radio frequency is shown on display. If wrong digit has been entered by mistake,...

• The diagnostic socket (green) is located below the righthand front seat.
• During fault diagnosis, the ignition switch must always be in the On position.
• The ISAT system number for the TC/ABS system is number 3.
• Always read off and note down all stored diagnostic trouble codes before disconnecting the battery or ECU.
• If communication cannot be established between ISAT and the ECU, check the leads between ECU pins 23 and 42 and the diagnostic socket. Also ensure the power feed and ground circuits to the diagnostic socket are good and the connector pins are not damaged.

Fluid Change

All brake fluid deteriorates after a time through oxidation and absorption of water. This lower the boiling point of the fluid, which may therefore vaporize during prolonged hard braking. The result can be sudden brake failure. It is therefore essential to change brake fluid at specified intervals.

• Using bleeder unit tool No. 88 19 096, or equivalent, siphon off fluid from reservoir.
• Fill reservoir with DOT 4 brake fluid.
